Darlington Raceway

1301 Harry Byrd Hwy.
Darlington, SC 29532

This distinctive egg-shaped racetrack put Darlington on the map! The first race at Darlington Raceway was held in 1950 on Labor Day, and a crowd of over 25,000 fans practically stood on top of each other and scaled the fence just for a glimpse of the action. Californian Johnny Mantz drove to victory that day in the first Southern 500, and over the next sixty years names like Baker, Flock, Thomas, Pearson, Yarborough, Petty and Earnhardt became commonplace in victory lane. Sixty years later the Darlington Raceway is still known as the track "Too Tough to Tame."

Come be apart of the tradition every Mother's Day weekend in May as the sports top stars look to tame the "Lady in Black" at the annual NASCAR Spring Cup Series Southern 500.
